The Background to the Whiskey Sour
A whiskey sour is a drink made with whiskey , lemon juice , and sugar . The whiskey is either bourbon , American blended, or rye whiskey . [1] Egg whites may be added to create a foam on top of the drink, [1] and is called a Boston sour . [2] Another variation of the whiskey sour is to add orange juice , which is called a California sour . [1]
The whiskey sour was developed in the late 19th century from the drink Whiskey Crusta , which is described in Jerry Thomas's 1862 book How to Mix Drinks . [1]
