Background to the Gin Sour
The gin sour is a classic cocktail that dates back to the 19th century, specifically to 1862 when it appeared in Jerry Thomas's book "The Bartender's Guide." It's a variation of the broader "sour" family of drinks, which traditionally consists of spirits, lemon juice, and sugar. The gin sour is a simple combination of gin, lemon juice, and sugar, and can be made even more complex with ingredients like egg whites or bitters, according to the Diageo Bar Academy and The Nosey Chef .
